The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program helps families pay rent in many
different neighborhoods. The rental units are privately owned and may be single
family houses or apartments in an apartment complex. Participant families
include elderly persons, disabled persons and working families who do not earn
enough to keep pace with rising rental housing costs.
Eligible applicants are responsible for finding their own rental unit of the
appropriate size that meets the requirements of the program and pay a portion
of their income toward rent. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD), through the Battle Creek Housing Commission, pays the
balance directly to the landlord by contract with the landlord.
The success of the program depends on our ability to contract with property
managers, and owners who have decent, safe, and sanitary rental units. A
Housing Quality Inspection will be conducted for all units before a Housing
Assistance Payment Contract (HAP) may be entered into. Participation in an
orientation program is required.
The Section 8 waiting list is currently "CLOSED" (no applications are being accepted at this time). We 'anticipate' it reopening approximately 2014 / 2015.
